The Cup Anemometer has a cup wheel of conical cups arranged in a horizontal plane. The cup-wheel spindle is made of stainless steel and connected through worm gearing to a rotation counter housed in a waterproof casing. By noting the counter reading at the start and end of any period, the average wind speed over that time can be calculated.
