The Power Electronic Training Board is designed specifically for studying the speed control of universal motors in different modes. Universal motors are series-wound motors capable of running on both AC and DC supply, and this board can control the speed of a universal motor up to 1/4 HP. It carries great educational value for science and engineering students.

Objective — to perform the following experiments:
1. Half-wave controller without feedback
2. Half-wave controller with feedback
3. Half-wave controller high-torque-at-low-speed version (skip-cycling operation)
4. Full-wave controller using a triac, demonstrating hysteresis effects improved by gate-slaving techniques

The board includes the following built-in parts:
1. SCR and triac for speed control
2. Two potentiometers
3. Two capacitors to control the firing angle of the thyristors
4. DIAC and two diodes
5. A universal motor of 1/12 HP or less
6. A snubber circuit in parallel with the triac to improve dV/dt and reduce RFI
7. An adequate number of other electronic components
8. Mains ON/OFF switch, fuse and jewel light

It operates on 230 V ±10% at 50 Hz AC mains, comes with stackable 4 mm patch cords (1/2 metre) and detailed operating instructions. Other apparatus required: a 3¾-digit digital multimeter and a dual-trace 20 MHz cathode-ray oscilloscope (unearthed).
