Fluid Mechanics Research Equipment: 10 Instruments and What to Specify
Fluid mechanics research equipment differs from a teaching rig in one main way. It has to produce data you can publish. A research lab may study flow dynamics, turbulence, and aerodynamics. It may also study multiphase flow, heat transfer, and how fluids and structures interact. Some labs run computer models (CFD) and need real rigs to check them. This guide covers ten items of fluid mechanics research equipment that postgraduate groups often build around.
For each one, we explain what it measures, where it is used, and what to put in the spec. Some items are standard fluid mechanics lab equipment that LabExports lists in its catalog. Others, such as laser velocimetry systems, are specialist instruments that research groups often buy from dedicated optics makers. We say which is which, so your tender list stays realistic.
How research needs shape fluid mechanics research equipment
A research group rarely needs every item on this list. It needs the fluid mechanics research equipment that fits its own questions. The choice depends on the research focus, the budget, and the skills of the staff. An environmental engineering group may care most about sediment and open-channel flow. A chemical engineering group may care about viscosity, mixing, and two-phase flow in pipes.
Before you write a bid, list the experiments the lab must run in its first three years. Then match each experiment to an instrument. This keeps the budget on equipment that will be used, not on items that sit in crates.
10 items of fluid mechanics research equipment
1. Wind tunnel
A wind tunnel moves air past a fixed model. You can then study lift, drag, pressure, and the thin boundary layer near the surface. High-speed tunnels suit aerospace work, but they are large, costly, and usually built to order. Most university labs start with a subsonic tunnel. It covers drag, airfoil tests, and flow visualisation.
Specify the test-section size, the top air speed, and the flow quality. List the instruments you need, such as a manometer bank, a Pitot-static tube, and a force balance. LabExports lists subsonic, closed-circuit, and boundary-layer wind tunnels in its fluid mechanics lab equipment range.
2. Laser Doppler velocimeter
A laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) measures fluid velocity at a single point without touching the flow. Two laser beams cross to form a small measuring volume. Seed particles passing through it scatter light. The Doppler shift in that light gives their speed. LDV is used in engineering, biology, and medicine where exact point speeds matter.
This is a specialist optical system. If your tender includes one, state the number of velocity components, the laser type and power, and the traverse system. Also plan for laser safety training through your institution's safety officer.
3. PIV system
Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measures a whole velocity field at once. A laser sheet lights up tracer particles, and a fast camera takes paired images. Software then works out how far the particles moved between frames. Researchers use PIV to map turbulence and vortices, from ship propellers to engines and blood flow.
Like LDV, PIV is usually bought from an optics specialist. Specify the camera resolution and frame rate, the laser energy, and the analysis software licence.
4. Hydraulic bench
A hydraulic bench is the base unit of most water-based fluid mechanics research equipment. It supplies a steady, measured flow of water to accessories on its top. Typical add-ons test Bernoulli's theorem, pipe friction, jet impact, and venturi and orifice meters.
In research labs, the bench is often used to calibrate flow meters or to feed custom test sections. Check the pump flow rate, the measuring tank, the sump size, and whether the top fits the add-ons you plan to buy.
5. Viscometer
A viscometer measures how much a fluid resists flow. Glass capillary types, such as U-tube viscometers, suit Newtonian fluids, and ASTM D445 describes kinematic viscosity testing with them. Saybolt viscometers, including the Saybolt Furol type, are used for fuel oils and bitumen products, and Redwood viscometers for petroleum oils. Specify the viscosity range, the temperature bath, and the calibration certificate you expect for each tube.
6. Rheometer
Many research fluids are non-Newtonian. Paints, gels, food, and blood are good examples. Their viscosity changes as they are sheared, so a simple viscometer is not enough. A rheometer controls the shear and records how the sample responds. Specify the geometry set (cone-plate, parallel plate, concentric cylinder), the torque range, and the temperature control. The catalog includes a dynamic shear rheometer used in bitumen testing.
7. Multiphase flow rig
A multiphase rig lets researchers watch how gas, liquid, and solids move together. Examples are sediment in rivers, slurries in pipelines, and gas-liquid flow in process plants. Transparent test sections make the flow pattern visible. Useful catalog items here include a pressure-drop-in-two-phase-flow unit and fluidised bed apparatus.
8. Open-channel flume
A flume is an open channel that carries water with a free surface, like a small river. Researchers use it to study hydraulic jumps, flow over weirs, sediment transport, and scour around bridge piers. A tilting flume lets you set the bed slope, and glass sides let you watch and film the flow. Specify the channel length, width, and depth, the slope range, the pump flow, and the weirs, gates, and point gauges included. Flumes and teaching channels are listed in the fluid flow lab range and the hydraulics ranges.
9. Hot-wire anemometer
A hot-wire anemometer measures fast changes in air speed. A very thin heated wire cools as air flows past it, and the electronics track that cooling thousands of times a second. This makes it a standard tool for turbulence and boundary-layer research, often used alongside a wind tunnel. It is a specialist instrument, not a basic vane anemometer. Specify the number of probes and wire directions, the bandwidth, the calibration unit, and the data-acquisition software.
10. Hydrometer
A hydrometer is the simplest item on this list and one of the most used. It floats in a liquid and reads density or specific gravity from a scale on its stem. Labs use it for fluid property checks, soil particle-size analysis, and battery electrolyte testing. Order a set that covers your density range, and ask for the reference temperature marked on each hydrometer.

Care, calibration, and safety
Fluid mechanics research equipment is only as good as its calibration. Keep a log for each instrument that records calibration dates, reference standards used, and any repairs. Water rigs need clean water and regular draining to limit scale and algae. Check pump seals and replace worn components before they leak into electrical parts.
Lasers, rotating machinery, and pressurised lines all carry risks. Follow the maker's manual. Ask your safety officer about guards, eye protection, and electrical safety. Do not run a rig outside its rated flow or pressure.
