The Bundesmann Apparatus is used to test the water repellency and water penetration of fabrics. It consists of a steel structure in which specimens are rotated at a set speed about a vertical axis, driven by an electric motor and worm-reduction gearbox located beneath the tank. The spray is produced by jets of water impinging from nozzles onto the specimens. The nozzles are fitted on aluminium blocks connected to a closed piping system, with water supplied by an electric pump. A control valve and pressure gauge regulate and indicate the line pressure, and a guard contains the splash produced. Water not impinging on the specimens is collected and drained away. This spray arrangement is mounted at the top of the structure to give the specified drop height, and a hinged plate that can be swung during testing protects the assembly from spray. An arrangement to collect water in the tank and re-circulate it with the pump is also provided.

The cup assembly consists of four aluminium cups with their axes tilted outward 10° to 15° from vertical, mounted on an aluminium base. Aluminium specimen-holding rings hold each specimen onto the cups with screwed clamps. Each cup has four wiper blades set perpendicular to each other in a cross; the wiper blades are made of stainless steel, tapered away from the centre, with a cylindrical rubbing face. The wiper assembly presses against the lower surface of the test specimen via a spring, and an arrangement makes the wiper-blade assembly oscillate through 100° four times per revolution of the cup assembly. A gunmetal drain is fitted to each cup for draining collected water. The cup assembly can be removed easily to mount specimens and drain collected water for determining how much water has penetrated the specimens. A specimen-loading plate is also provided to hold the wipers level while mounting the specimen.
