Product details

The Anaerobic Digester is a laboratory teaching unit used to study sewage treatment and bio-gas generation, the process by which animal or food waste is converted into biogas and biofertiliser. Using an anaerobic contact process, a series of reactors separates the waste into zones (the first being the biogas zone), letting students observe digestion and gas production under controlled conditions.

Investigated process: Anaerobic digestion consists of two distinct stages, which are: (1) the hydrolysis of complex organic molecules into acetic acid, and (2) the transformation of acetic acid into methane gas and carbon dioxide.

Application areas:

  • Study of Sewage/Biogas Production
  • Environmental, biotechnology and chemical-engineering teaching labs
  • Showing the concepts of anaerobic digestion and bio-energy production
