The Exposure Rack is used for testing coated fabrics. Various materials — coated fabrics, PVC sheeting, or cable insulation and sheathing — change colour when exposed to daylight for a sufficient period, due to the action of light on the dyes used. The severity of exposure, in both time and light intensity, determines the extent of the colour change. Colourfastness is denoted by the number of the dyed wool standard (supplied by the British Standards Institute) that has changed colour to the same extent as the test sample, expressed as a numerical light-fastness rating. The Exposure Rack consists of an open-bottomed wooden box fitted with a removable wooden frame carrying a wire screen, a removable wooden rack to support the test pieces and wool standards, and a hinged cover made of an aluminium frame with an acrylic sheet fixed to it. The box sits on a stand to keep it open at a 45° inclination to the horizontal.
