The Fiber Optic Simplex Analogue Transceiver Trainer is designed specifically for studying a typical linear intensity-modulation system for analogue signal transmission, and carries great educational value for science and engineering students.

Objective: to study the AC characteristics of a linear intensity-modulation system — the gain characteristics of a fibre-optic system (Vin AC vs Vo AC for fixed carrier power and signal frequency), the frequency response (Vout AC vs frequency at fixed carrier power and Vin AC), and the gain-bandwidth product of the receiver (gain vs bandwidth for fixed Vin).

The board includes the following built-in parts: IC-regulated DC power supply, fibre-optic transmitter, fibre-optic receiver, a potentiometer to vary the LED current in the transmitter and the phototransistor in the receiver, and an adequate number of other electronic components, plus a mains ON/OFF switch, fuse and jewel light. It operates on 230 V ±10% at 50 Hz AC mains and comes with stackable 4 mm patch cords (1/2 metre), good-quality terminals/sockets for connections and waveform observation, and detailed operating instructions covering objective, theory, design procedures, report suggestions and book references.

Other apparatus required: an AF/RF generator (10 Hz to 1 MHz), a digital multimeter and a 20 MHz cathode-ray oscilloscope.
