The Melt Flow Index Apparatus measures the melt flow index of plastic material. The system comprises a heated extruder tube, an interchangeable die through which the material under test is extruded, and a piston with dead weights to apply the specified load on the material inside the tube. The extruder tube is made from carbon steel and heated by a band heater surrounding its outer circumference, with a PID controller to display and control its temperature; the heater is lagged with mineral-wool insulation. The base of the tube is lined with PTFE to prevent the extrudate sticking. The die is made from hardened and ground die steel and held at the base of the tube. The piston, made from silver steel and relieved at the upper end, pushes the extrudate out and moves within the tube bore, with a sleeve to guide the relieved portion. The top of the piston carries a plate-frame to hold the load, thermally insulated from it. The extruder assembly is mounted on a metal box, and a sheet-metal control panel on the side houses the PID controller, a digital preset timer and other electronic parts. Cleaning tools for the tube bore and dies, plugs, and a cutter for the extrudate are also supplied.
