The set-up comprises a heavy stainless steel disc mounted on a horizontal shaft and driven by a variable-speed motor. The rotor shaft is coupled to a motor mounted on a trunnion frame with bearings in a load frame, free to rotate about the vertical axis. A weight pan on the opposite side of the disc balances the weight of the motor. The rotor disc can be moved about three axes, and torque can be applied by calculating the weight and its distance from the centre of the rotor, allowing the gyroscopic couple to be determined.

Scope of experiments:
· Experimental verification of the relation T = I·ω·ωp for calculating the gyroscopic couple, by observing and measuring results for the applied couple T and the precession rate ωp
· To study the gyroscopic effect of a rotating disc
