This apparatus determines the softening point of bitumen — the temperature at which a sample of bituminous material, loaded with a 9.5 mm dia steel ball, sags a specified distance when heated under specified conditions. The apparatus comprises a steel bracket with a sliding plate support; the support has two 10 mm dia holes on which a ring-and-ball guide rests, and a central hole for inserting a thermometer. Supplied with an approximately 600 ml glass beaker, a hand stirrer and two 9.5 mm dia steel balls.
