Sole Adhesion.
The Sole Adhesion Tester measures the bond strength of the sole to the footwear; a digital model is also available. The system comprises a spring dynamometer that indicates the load applied at the junction of the sole and upper, a lever arrangement to transmit the load applied on the toe piece to the dynamometer, a straight-edge support on which the shoe rests during the test, and a set of interchangeable toe pieces of different curvature. The spring dynamometer indicates the load applied on the joint directly in kilograms, allowing for the mechanical advantage of the lever. It has two pointers — a black one showing the direct load acting on the toe piece, and a red dummy pointer to show the maximum load applied before adhesion failure. The five toe pieces have different curvatures to allow toes and heels of various shapes and sizes to be tested, while the arc length of each is the same to ensure the load is applied only on a fixed length of joint. They are made of carbon steel for long operational life, and any one can be held in the equipment at a time. The shoe support has adjustable height (set with spacer strips) to allow soles of different thickness to be tested. The instrument is finished in paint and bright chrome plating for corrosion resistance.
