Specific Gravity Balance.
The Specific Gravity Balance provides a simple, quick way to read the specific gravity of rubber and other elastomers directly, reducing labour and eliminating calculations. Finding the specific gravity of a sample takes only about half a minute. The balance consists of a rigid scale, marked in specific gravity (SG) and standing vertically on a heavy base plate. A balancing arm is pivoted at the centre of the scale on jewel bearings to minimise friction. At one end of the arm, two stainless steel pins hang on threads, one of which is attached to a glass sinker resting on the base. A guard prevents accidental tipping of the sample during use, and a pointer at the other end of the arm indicates the specific gravity of the material under test. A sliding weight is provided for initial balancing of samples of different weight, and the base plate is levelled.
Two models are available: one with a specific-gravity range of 0.9 to 3.0 and one with a range of 0.2 to 2.0. A sample of any shape weighing between 5 and 12 g can be tested in the first model, between 3 and 5 g in the second, and between 1 and 2 g in the third. In the second and third models, the lower pin is heavy and also acts as a sinker, and the glass sinker rests on the base of a frame that slides up and down on a rod fixed to the base plate to cover the full specific-gravity range.
