Buying an HPLC Analyzer for a Ghana Laboratory: Specs, Setup and Export Steps
An HPLC analyzer separates a liquid mixture into its components, then identifies and measures each one. Labs in Ghana use this kind of system for drug quality checks, food testing, water and soil analysis, and university teaching. This guide explains how an HPLC analyzer works, which specs to compare, and what to include when you import one from India.
LabExports makes and exports lab equipment from India and lists an HPLC system in its general lab equipment range. Prices are quoted on request, based on the configuration, quantity, and delivery point in Ghana.
How an HPLC analyzer works
HPLC stands for high performance liquid chromatography. A pump pushes a solvent, called the mobile phase, through a packed column at high pressure. The packing inside the column is the stationary phase.
An injector places a small volume of sample into the moving solvent. Each compound in the sample sticks to the packing to a different degree, so each one leaves the column at a different time. This step is the separation. A detector at the outlet records a peak for each compound. Software then turns the peaks into a chromatogram and works out how much of each compound is present.
Main parts of an HPLC system
- Solvent delivery pump. An isocratic pump runs one fixed solvent mix. A gradient pump (binary or quaternary) changes the mix during a run, which helps with complex samples.
- Degasser. Removes dissolved air from the solvent so bubbles do not upset the pump or detector.
- Injector or autosampler. A manual loop injector suits teaching labs. An autosampler suits labs that run many samples a day.
- Column and column oven. Reversed-phase C18 and C8 columns cover most routine work. Phenyl and other phases are used for special methods. An oven keeps the column at a steady temperature, which keeps results repeatable.
- Detector. A UV-Vis detector reads one or a few wavelengths. A photodiode array (PDA) detector records a full spectrum for each peak. Refractive index detectors suit compounds with little UV absorbance, such as sugars. Fluorescence detectors give higher sensitivity for fluorescent or derivatized compounds.
- Data system. The software controls the run, stores the data, and prints reports. Check the communication interface between the software and the modules, such as USB or LAN.
HPLC analyzer specs to compare
Specs vary by make and model, so compare offers line by line. The table below lists the points that matter most in a bid.
| Spec | Why it matters | What to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Flow rate range | Sets which columns and methods you can run | Range in mL/min and flow accuracy (many systems cover roughly 0.1 to 10 mL/min) |
| Maximum pressure | Limits column length and particle size | Rated pressure in bar or psi (conventional HPLC is often rated around 400 bar, UHPLC much higher) |
| Detector wavelength range | Decides which compounds you can detect | Range in nm for UV-Vis or PDA, plus noise and drift figures |
| Injection volume | Affects sensitivity and repeatability | Loop sizes or autosampler range in µL |
| Column compatibility | Lets you use standard columns | Fittings type and column sizes supported |
| Software | Controls data quality and reporting | Audit trail, user levels, export formats |
| Size and weight | Must fit your bench and building | Footprint of the full stack |
Pharmaceutical labs often need software with an audit trail and user access control. In the United States these features are tied to 21 CFR Part 11 on electronic records. Ask your quality team which rules your lab follows before you fix the software spec.
Where labs in Ghana use an HPLC analyzer
- Pharmaceuticals. Assay of active ingredients, impurity checks, and dissolution testing on raw materials and finished products.
- Food and drink. Testing for additives, sugars, vitamins, and pesticide residues.
- Environment. Finding pollutants in water, soil, and air samples.
- Agriculture. Checking crops and soil for pesticide and drug residues.
- Forensics and textiles. Separating compounds in case samples, and checking dyes.
- Universities. Teaching chromatography in chemistry, pharmacy, and food science courses.
An HPLC analyzer is one part of an analytical lab. For the wider picture, read our guide to analytical lab equipment. Many labs pair HPLC with a UV-Vis or atomic absorption spectrophotometer for other tests.
Setting up an HPLC analyzer in Ghana
Ghana uses 230 V, 50 Hz mains power. State this in your request so pumps, detectors, and the PC come set for local supply. HPLC runs can last hours, so a UPS or voltage stabilizer is worth adding if power at your site is not steady.
Plan the room as well. The system needs a firm bench, a stable room temperature, and space for solvent bottles and waste. Solvents such as methanol and acetonitrile are flammable and toxic. Your safety officer should approve storage and waste handling.
Budget for consumables from the start:
- Spare columns and guard columns.
- HPLC-grade solvents and water.
- Membrane filters (for example 0.45 µm) for solvents and samples.
- Vials, caps, and syringes.
- Pump seals and check valves as spares.
Exporting an HPLC analyzer from India to Ghana
An HPLC analyzer is a sensitive, high-value shipment. Each module should be packed in fitted foam inside a strong case. Export orders ship by sea or air freight with export documents. Air freight is often chosen for single instruments, and sea freight for a full lab fit-out.
When you ask for a quote, send:
- Your methods or the samples you plan to test, so the detector and column choice fit.
- Pump type (isocratic or gradient) and injector type (manual or autosampler).
- Software needs, such as audit trail or report formats.
- Questions for any supplier: can installation, training, or IQ/OQ qualification documents be provided, and who would carry them out locally in Ghana?
- Your tender reference, if any, and the delivery city or port.
For public tenders, the Ghana tender guide sets out how procurement works there. The lab tender support page explains the spec sheets and bid paperwork LabExports can prepare. When you are ready, request a quote for an HPLC analyzer with your configuration and delivery point.
