This setup demonstrates moisture removal by heat under forced-draft action, created by a hot-air stream, and the fluidisation property of the solid being dried. It consists of a specially designed vertical column whose lower conical section is filled with moist solids, supported on a screen mesh held between two flanges. Air from a blower passes through a heating chamber to produce hot air, which acts as the drying agent: it enters from the lower side of the column and leaves from the top outlet, removing the moisture from the solids. A cyclone at the top outlet collects the solid particles carried out by the air stream. An arrangement is provided to adjust and measure the airflow rate, and a digital temperature controller controls and measures the air-stream temperature.

Utilities required: 230 V ±10% AC, 50 Hz single-phase supply with proper earthing (a 5 A socket for the measuring scale and a 15 A socket for the heater); sawdust @ 1 kg or granular free-flowing solid of 1–2 mm size; and an anemometer for airflow measurement.
