Franck-Hertz Experiment.

The Franck-Hertz experiment is used to excite atoms by low-energy electron bombardment. The energy transferred from the electrons to the atoms always takes discrete values, confirming the atomic energy levels proposed by Bohr. It is an important experiment that can be performed in any college or university laboratory.

The experiment consists of:
· Argon-filled tetrode
· Filament power supply: 3.6–3.4 V continuously variable
· Power supply for VG1K: 1.3–5 V continuously variable
· Power supply for VG2A: 1.3–12 V continuously variable
· Power supply for VG2K: 0–95 V continuously variable
· Sawtooth waveform for CRO display
· Scanning voltage: 0–80 V; scanning frequency: 115 ±20 Hz
· Multirange digital ammeter, 3½-digit LED display, ranges 10−7, 10−8 and 10−9 A

The instrument can plot the amplitude-spectrum curve by point-by-point measurement and can also display the curve directly on an oscilloscope screen, making it ideal as a classroom demonstration for a group of students.
